Fluctuations in the diffuse X-ray background observed with Ginga

چکیده
We present Ginga measurements of the spatial fluctuations in the diffuse X-ray background. When combined with earlier results, the new data constrain the extragalactic logN − log S relation in the 2–10 keV energy band to a form close to the Euclidean prediction over the flux range 10−10 − 5 × 10−13 erg cm−2 s−1. The normalisation of the 2–10 keV source counts is a factor 2−3 above that derived in the softer 0.3–3.5 keV band from the Einstein Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey if a spectral conversion is assumed which ignores X-ray absorption intrinsic to the sources. Both this result and the spectral characteristics of the spatial fluctuations are consistent with relatively low-luminosity active galaxies ( i.e. LX < 10 44 erg s−1) dominating the 2–10 keV source counts at intermediate flux levels. We also use the ‘excess variance’ of the fluctuations to constrain possible clustering of the underlying discrete sources.

متن کاملGamma-Ray Burst Spectra and Time Histories From 2 to 400 keV
The Gamma-Ray burst detector on Ginga consisted of a proportional counter to observe the x-rays and a scintillation counter to observe the gamma-rays. It was ideally suited to study the x-rays associated with gammaray bursts (GRBs). Ginga detected ∼ 120 GRBs and 22 of them had sufficient statistics to determine spectra from 2 to 400 keV. Although the Ginga and BATSE trigger criteria were very s...
متن کاملFluctuations in the Radio Background from Intergalactic Synchrotron Emission
The shocks produced in the intergalactic medium during large-scale structure formation accelerate a population of highly relativistic electrons which emit synchrotron radiation due to intergalactic magnetic fields. In a previous paper (Loeb & Waxman 2000) we have shown that these electrons cool primarily by inverse-Compton scattering of the microwave background photons and can thereby produce t...
متن کاملThe large-scale diffuse X-ray emission surrounding quasars: an investigation using the scaling-index method
The large-scale (∼ 20) diffuse x-ray background surrounding a sample of quasars observed during ROSAT PSPC pointed observations is studied using a new source-detection algorithm, the scaling-index method. This algorithm, which can identify individual photons as belonging to a source or background, is useful for detecting faint, extended sources in noisy fields. Using this method, we find that, ...
